Winter Campaigns in Summer: Snow Filming in the Italian Alps

Selected glacier filming locations in Italy can provide real snow, prepared ski terrain and high-altitude winter backgrounds during summer. These locations are suitable for ski commercials, sportswear advertising, winter fashion campaigns, beauty shoots and commercial film, video and photo production. Unlike a conventional winter shoot, summer snow production depends on altitude, early-morning operating windows, current snow coverage, lift access, filming permits and glacier safety, so every location must be verified for the exact production dates.
Passo dello Stelvio / Stelvio Glacier
Authentic Summer Ski Filming in Italy
Located between approximately 2,758 and 3,450 metres, the Stelvio Glacier offers more than 20 kilometres of high-altitude summer ski terrain and is one of Italy’s strongest locations for authentic ski action, winter sportswear campaigns, equipment launches and snow-based advertising production. Lift operations are concentrated in the morning, when the snow surface and temperature are generally most suitable for skiing, and specially arranged early access may be available during part of the summer season. Filming at Passo dello Stelvio requires current snow verification, ski-area permission, piste allocation, athlete coordination, road-status checks, equipment transport, rescue coverage and a realistic weather backup plan.
Plateau Rosà / Matterhorn Glacier Paradise
High-Altitude Summer Snow Production in Cervinia
Reached from Breuil-Cervinia through the high-altitude lift system, Plateau Rosà offers summer skiing above 3,500 metres, with terrain extending to approximately 3,883 metres and up to 25 kilometres of glacier pistes. The combination of prepared snow, large open slopes and Matterhorn views makes it ideal for ski and snowboard commercials, luxury outerwear, eyewear, winter beauty campaigns and large-scale commercial photography. The active summer ski terrain lies on Swiss territory, so production must be coordinated across the Italian access system and the Swiss-side operation. High temperatures can also shorten daily skiing hours, making early calls, compact crews and precise lift and equipment planning essential.
Skyway Monte Bianco / Punta Helbronner
Glacier Fashion Filming at 3,466 Metres
Punta Helbronner provides a spectacular summer glacier environment at approximately 3,466 metres, with contemporary cable-car architecture, panoramic terraces and direct views of the perennial glaciers and granite peaks of the Mont Blanc massif. It is particularly effective for winter fashion, luxury advertising, watches, technical outerwear, beauty campaigns and cinematic product imagery, although it is not a groomed summer ski location. Any production leaving the maintained station and terrace areas enters genuine mountaineering terrain: glacier routes are unmarked, unmonitored and exposed to hazards including crevasses, avalanches and rockfall. Qualified alpine guides, appropriate technical equipment, strict weather thresholds and a compact specialist crew are therefore essential.
Punta Indren / Monte Rosa Glacier
Lift-Accessed Summer Glacier Filming at 3,275 Metres
Accessible from Alagna Valsesia and Gressoney-La-Trinité through the Monterosa lift network, Punta Indren reaches 3,275 metres and provides direct access to the Indren Glacier. The location offers authentic summer snow, glacial surfaces and monumental high-altitude scenery for winter fashion campaigns, technical outerwear, watches, beauty advertising, mountaineering brands and cinematic film and photo production in the Italian Alps. Punta Indren is not a groomed summer ski resort, making it more suitable for controlled fashion, product and mountaineering-led filming than repeated piste action. Beyond the upper station, the crew enters genuine glacier terrain where crevasses, altitude and changing snow conditions require certified alpine guides, rope and crampon systems, compact equipment, lift coordination, current snow verification and strict weather thresholds.
Need an Unmistakable Dolomites Background?

For campaigns that specifically require the visual identity of the Dolomites, Marmolada–Punta Rocca can be evaluated as a condition-dependent alternative. The cable car reaches approximately 3,265 metres and provides access to glacier views, high-altitude rock and the surrounding Dolomite skyline during the summer operating season. Marmolada should not be presented as guaranteed summer ski terrain: visible snow, the suitability of the foreground and safe access must be confirmed through a recent snow and technical recce before the location is proposed to the client.
Summer snow shoots are not ordinary mountain location days. The right snow surface may be available for only a few morning hours, lift schedules can change because of heat or wind, public tickets do not provide commercial filming access, and professional equipment may need to pass through several operators or cross an international border. Glacier terrain also requires specialist guides, safety equipment and location-specific risk planning.

Without experienced local producers and location managers, a crew can easily arrive with the wrong permissions, too much equipment, an unrealistic schedule or no safe access to the selected snow. ORBIS Production coordinates current snow reports, location scouting, filming permits, ski-area and cable-car agreements, alpine guides, athletes, local crews, equipment transport, accommodation and weather backup locations. We turn a visually attractive idea into a confirmed, safe and production-ready plan for international film, video, photo, fashion, advertising and commercial productions in the Italian Alps.

How Location Scouting & Filming Permits Work in the Dolomites

Filming in the Dolomites and Italian Alps requires careful coordination of locations, permits, weather, access and mountain safety. ORBIS Production manages the complete process for film, video, photo, fashion, advertising and commercial productions across Cortina d’Ampezzo, South Tyrol, Trentino, Veneto and Northern Italy.
  • Project Brief & Production Strategy
We review the creative concept, filming dates, crew size, technical requirements, budget and final deliverables. This allows us to develop a realistic production strategy based on season, altitude, snow conditions, road access and the visual requirements of the campaign.
    01
  • Location Scouting & Visual Selection
Our local location managers scout filming locations in the Dolomites and Italian Alps, including mountain roads, ski areas, alpine lakes, forests, villages, hotels, chalets and high-altitude landscapes. Each option is evaluated for visual impact, natural light, accessibility, filming permits and production feasibility.
    02
  • Permit & Access Feasibility
Before confirming a location, we identify the relevant municipalities, landowners, nature parks, ski resorts, cable-car operators and road authorities. We verify commercial filming restrictions, access conditions, production fees, drone feasibility, parking and permitted working hours.
    03
  • Technical Recce
A technical recce confirms camera positions, sun direction, crew access, equipment transport, parking, power, sound conditions and weather protection. For snow, glacier and high-altitude filming, we also verify current terrain conditions, lift operations and mountain-safety requirements.
    04
  • Filming Permits & Property Agreements
We coordinate filming permits in Cortina d’Ampezzo, South Tyrol, Trentino, Veneto and the wider Italian Alps. Our production team also manages private-property agreements for hotels, chalets, mountain huts, sports venues, ski areas and commercial locations.
    05
  • Alpine Logistics & Safety
We organise production vehicles, cable-car freight, equipment transport, local crews, mountain guides, ski professionals, catering and crew facilities. Every logistics plan is adapted to altitude, weather, seasonal road conditions and the safe movement of talent and technical equipment.
    06
  • Final Schedule & Crew Coordination
All confirmed locations, permits, transport plans and safety requirements are integrated into the final schedule and call sheet. We coordinate local film crews, athletes, suppliers, equipment rental, accommodation and production services across Northern Italy.
    07
  • On-Set Management & Wrap
Our local producers and location managers supervise access, permits, crew movement, property communication and changing weather conditions throughout the shoot. After filming, all equipment and temporary installations are removed, and the location is restored according to the agreed production conditions.
    08
Producing in the Dolomites and Italian Alps requires more than access to a spectacular mountain location. It requires local producers and location managers who understand filming permits, seasonal roads, cable-car operations, protected areas, changing weather and alpine safety.

ORBIS Production supports international brands, agencies and production companies with full-service film, video and photo production across Cortina d’Ampezzo, South Tyrol, Trentino, Veneto and the wider Italian Alps.

From the first location scout to the final wrap, we structure every advertising, commercial, fashion, automotive and outdoor production around confirmed access, realistic logistics, experienced crews and safe on-set execution.

Why Film in Italian Alps

The Dolomites and Italian Alps offer one of Europe’s most versatile natural backdrops for film, video and photo production. Monumental peaks, snow-covered ski areas, alpine lakes, forests, mountain roads, historic villages, luxury resorts and modern sports venues can be combined within a single regional production.

Each season creates a different visual world. Winter provides snow, frozen landscapes and active ski terrain; summer offers green alpine plateaux, mountain roads and long daylight; autumn brings golden larch forests and atmospheric weather. Selected glacier locations in the wider Italian Alps — including Passo dello Stelvio and Plateau Rosà above Breuil-Cervinia — can also support authentic snow and ski filming during summer, subject to current snow conditions, lift operations, filming permits and mountain safety.

From Cortina d’Ampezzo and the Dolomites to South Tyrol, Trentino and the Aosta Valley, the region is ideal for advertising campaigns, automotive commercials, fashion and luxury shoots, sportswear productions, documentaries, tourism films and branded content. Professional location scouting, local location managers, filming permit coordination, alpine crews and production logistics make complex mountain shoots practical, safe and efficient.

Production in Alps: What You Need to Know

Mountain production is shaped by season, altitude, weather, access and local regulations. A filming location that appears simple on a map may involve municipal permits, private-property approval, protected-area rules, lift operators, mountain guides and carefully timed equipment transport. Early location scouting and local production planning are essential for film, video, photo, fashion, advertising and commercial shoots in Cortina d’Ampezzo, the Dolomites and the wider Italian Alps.
  • There Is No Single Alpine Filming Permit
Filming permits in the Dolomites and Italian Alps are location-specific. A single production may require approval from a municipality, private landowner, nature park, road authority, ski resort, cable-car operator, hotel or mountain refuge.

Our local location managers identify the correct stakeholders before a location is confirmed and coordinate permit applications, property agreements, access conditions, production fees and permitted working hours.
  • Mountain Access Is Seasonal
Mountain roads, alpine passes, cable cars, ski lifts and refuges do not operate under the same conditions throughout the year. Some filming locations are accessible by vehicle in summer but require snow transport, skis or a specialist mountain approach in winter.

Lift schedules, road openings, parking restrictions and final equipment-carrying distances must be verified for the exact production dates.
  • Weather Can Change the Entire Schedule
Weather in the Italian Alps can change rapidly, especially at high altitude. Wind, cloud, snowfall, rain, ice, lightning or reduced visibility may affect lift operations, road access, drone filming and the safety of the selected camera position.

Every mountain production should include clear weather thresholds, realistic turnaround times and backup filming locations at a different elevation.
  • Snow Must Be Confirmed for the Exact Dates
Snow coverage varies by elevation, season, temperature and mountain orientation. Archive photography cannot guarantee that a location will provide the same winter appearance during the planned shoot.

Selected glacier locations in the wider Italian Alps may support authentic snow and ski filming during summer, but current snow conditions, safe access, lift operations and commercial filming permissions must always be checked through an updated location recce.
  • Protected Landscapes Require Low-Impact Planning
Many filming locations in the Dolomites are situated within nature parks, UNESCO landscapes or environmentally sensitive alpine terrain. Vehicle access, drones, generators, artificial lighting, temporary structures and large crews may be restricted.

Productions must protect vegetation, water, wildlife, historic surfaces and public trails while following the conditions established by landowners and local authorities.
  • Crew Size and Equipment Footprint Matter
A location suitable for a photographer and two assistants may not support a full commercial film crew. Cable-car capacity, narrow paths, limited parking, exposed terrain and the distance from shelter can determine the practical scale of the production.

For remote and high-altitude filming, a compact mobile unit with battery-powered equipment is often more efficient than moving the complete crew and technical package onto the mountain.
  • Alpine Safety Is Part of Pre-Production
Snow, glaciers, exposed ridges, climbing routes and active ski areas require specialist safety planning. Depending on the location and creative concept, the production may need qualified mountain guides, ski instructors, rope-access specialists, medics or coordination with ski patrol and local rescue services.

Safety procedures, communication systems, emergency access and weather decisions should be confirmed before the crew reaches the filming location.
  • Drone Filming Requires Separate Feasibility
A filming permit for the ground location does not automatically authorise drone operations. Flights may be affected by aviation restrictions, protected areas, cable infrastructure, nearby buildings, public activity, mountain wind and limited take-off or landing space.

Drone and FPV filming in the Dolomites should be evaluated separately, with qualified operators, suitable permissions and a location-specific flight and safety plan.
  • Local Production Knowledge Saves Time and Cost
Filming across Cortina d’Ampezzo, South Tyrol, Trentino, Veneto and the wider Italian Alps involves different authorities, operators and local working practices. A locally based production team can verify access, communicate with stakeholders and respond quickly when weather or logistics change.

ORBIS Production combines location scouting, filming permits, alpine logistics, local crews and on-set coordination within one production structure.
We assess these factors before the client commits to a filming location, reducing permit risks, unnecessary transport, schedule delays and avoidable production costs in the mountains.
